Define your objectives

Ready to renovate or build a new aquatic facility? Looking to add a waterslide or water play equipment? Let’s get started! Answer the following five questions to help narrow and focus your planning process:

1. Why are you planning to renovate or build a new aquatic facility?
What do you hope to accomplish? Create a gathering spot? Foster community involvement? Will you break-even or make a profit? Do you see this as an investment to generate revenues or purely as an expense? Update an old facility or program? Breathe life into a sinking aquatics program?
2. Are you working with professional designers?
Are you planning the facility design yourself? Have you sought out the advice of an aquatic designer of architect? Are you working with a landscape architect? Is this project new construction, a renovation or just the addition of new equipment?
3. How much can you afford to spend on your project?
Are you limited to a specific budget? Do you have the funds on-hand or will you raise funding through fundraising or bond initiatives? What will your budget cover? Will you have separate funding for construction and equipment or one combined budget? Will your budget cover the cost of equipment only, or can it also include equipment installation?
4. What is the timeframe for your project?
Do you have a deadline for completing your aquatics project? Does the deadline coincide with a seasonal opening? This is a good time to brainstorm a rough schedule for planning, review equipment purchase, site preparation and installation.
5. How will you measure the success of your project?
Will you measure success by head count or in revenues generated. Will you survey parents and kids? Will you survey your facility staff; both veteran and new. Will you track maintenance time and costs against initial expectations?

There are plenty of other questions that you could ask when considering an investment like this but we’ve found these to be good catalysts to jump start the planning process.
